A Glimpse Into a Pig’s Secret Bookshelves by Sullivan McPig + Giveaway

Today we are very happy to cede the blog to a fellow and highly esteemed and beloved blogger, please give it all up for the fantastic Sullivan McPig!! *crowd roars, lights flash and amidst the blaring music you see the shadow of someone approaching the stage… yes..yes it is him!! It is Sully! The crowd goes wild,  several girls faint in the front rows, rock concerts are tamer than this…* So please everyone take a seat and wecome Sully!

First of all I’d like to congratulate Book Lovers Inc for passing the 1000 followers mark!
I always enjoy your reviews, giveaways and other posts and think it’s not surprising that so many people want to follow this awesome blog.
One of the features I always enjoy is the bookshelf porn and so when I was asked if I wanted to join in the celebrations my choice for a topic for my guest post was easy. So here comes a peek at all the shelves at my home.
Let’s start in the living room:

Me and Voodoo Bride aren’t the only book lovers in this house: my owner and her OtherHalf are book lovers as well, so in our living room we have a huge custom build bookcase which runs along the entire wall of the living room. On the picture above you see only part of this bookcase. This part is filled (mainly) with children’s books, comics, graphic novels and role-playing books.

Other books you can find in the living room bookcase are by Pratchett, Koonz, Tolkien and Gaiman to name a few.

All in all the bookcase in the living room contains all the books that interest all of the book lovers in this house. From Christie to Rowlings and from comics to Encyclopaedias.
On to my owner’s work room aka the Milka room (because of it‘s purple walls):
This is where the really good stuff can be found!
Here we keep all the Urban Fantasy, PNR and Zombie books.
The left bookcase holds all the paperbacks we already read, including our favorite books, signed books and the occasional ARC.
The right bookcase holds all larger books, our collection of Mercedes Lackey books and the books that are still on our tbr-pile as well as some other non-bookish stuff.
With our continually growing pile of books I got the feeling the right bookcase will have to be reorganised and lose some of the non-book items that it currently holds though.
We’re already double stacking shelves to be able to store all our books as it is.

Sometimes there’s some searching before I can find a book I want to reread.

As you can see even the hippos in this house are book lovers 😉

My favorites shelves!
Here are all my favorite books, many of them signed as well. It won’t be long before I’ll have to double stack this shelf as well I’m afraid. There’s just too many awesome books out there.

And lastly something I think no book lover can do without: My bookmark holder!
In this holder I keep all my bookmarks, bookcover cards and trading cards so I never have to search for a bookmark.
So as you see: a house full of books and the stacks of books keep growing. I might have to invest in an ereader in the near future so I can save the remaining bookshelf space for the most awesome of awesome books.

You can find out more about Sully at his blog, Twitter and Goodreads.

I have a small section of shelves with my absolute favorite books. Those that I love and might want to re-read any moment need to be within easy reach after all. Other books are often stowed away in boxes.

Oh bookmarks how I love thee – and yes, I do store them, so to say. I have a big mug on my desk where I put them.

  • LSUReader October 12, 2011 at 12:25 pm

Wow. Even your stuffed animals have their own bookshelves. Color me green with envy.

I have an area with favorite books, but it's not nearly big enough.

    Thanks for sharing.

I don't have many bookmarks (maybe 5-7), but I use only one of them. It's a yellow bookmark with a calendar on one side & bookstore addresses on the other.

Ooo what great pictures! I am getting jealous of those bookcases, lovely! And I do recognize some series, like The Cat Who, and Dorothy Gilman books? Yes I am Dutch also.

I keep my bookmarks in a ceramic jug from Rapalje, which I got at a fantasy fair. Love those. And the band of course. Especially William, sigh.

  • Sullivan McPig October 12, 2011 at 3:29 pm

@Birgit & Estella: I had my books stored in boxes during a move. I kept wanting to read books that were somewhere in those boxes.

@Yto: as long as you're able to find them it doesn't matter where you keep them 😉

@LSUReader: stuffed animals are very important in this household

@Natalija: I will confess I have a few favorite bookmarks as well.

@roro, IreneRJ and samantha35: thanks for your comments.

@Aurian: Yup: you identified those series correctly. Zwarte Beertjes pockets are very recognisable, don't you think? 😉
Voodoo Bride (my sidekick) agrees with you on Rapalje.

@Proserpine: keeping bookmarks in books is a way to store them as well :-p

@Mel: That's the great thing of living together with other booklovers, everyone agreed on having the bookcase in the livingroom.

@Blodeuedd: I hope your parents live close so you can get to your books easily.

  • Sullivan McPig October 12, 2011 at 3:31 pm

@Chelsea B.: Green is my favorite color 😉

  • Mary October 12, 2011 at 3:45 pm

Most of my bookmarks are in manilla envelopes stacked in my closet, I collect them and have about 500 right now. Could be closer to 800 since I've been getting so many lately..not that I am complaining..I love bookmarks so much that I give them away on my blog so others can see what a joy they are.

I have several several bookshelves and I used to have a 'Keeper" shelf but now they are all keepers. lol

I maintain a notebook organized by author where I store bookmarks, postcards and trading cards. I haven't totally figured out what to do with all of the other little things I have won in the past couple of year. They are spread out everywhere.
I keep all of my read and want to keep books at the top of my bookshelves. All of my TBR are either in the lower portions of the bookcase or in and on my nightstand. I recently ran out of room and then some (even double stacking was no good). So I now stack my paperbacks bottom to top and then still double layer front to back. I have got to take a speed reading course!

  • Jet October 12, 2011 at 6:56 pm

I have to double stack my bookshelves as well! I also have a storage tub of books because I have run out of room in my bookcase haha I don't really have a particular shelf of favourites.

I keep my bookmarks on top of my to-read pile of books on my shelf so I have one ready when I need one. I keep my favourite bookmarks in a box in my wardrobe so they won't get dusty or ruined.

I am so jealous of those book cases!
I do have some bookcases, but I put a lot of paperbacks in those cardboard flats that grocery stores get boxed berries in. The large ones fit two nice lines of paperbacks, they stack well together, are strong, and also slide nicely under furniture.
I keep the really pretty bookmarks in a large ziploc bag (in case I figure out a way to display them someday). I love the business card size magnets I have gotten from some authors – I'm making a nice collage on the fridge.

And yes, my bestest-favies are on an antique bookcase in my bedroom well within arm's reach!

  • Kaetrin October 12, 2011 at 10:52 pm

I'm a bit jealous of all your bookshelves! 🙂 We have bookshelves in the bedroom, all along the hallway, in the lounge room and in the study and I have them hidden in the coffee table (not to mention the ebooks) but there still doesn't seem to be enough space.

I've realised I've become addicted to bookmarks too – I'm getting quite a collection these days!

I think my bookmarks have been reproducing, because I seem to have more of them than I thought. But they're never at hand when I want them, so my most common bookmark is a store receipt.

Everyone knows that there is no such thing as too many books, but every Book Lover knows that there IS such a thing as not enough bookshelves. Yours are beautiful, especially the living room ones.

I don't really use bookmarks, I tend to memorize the number of the page I'm on. I do have a number of bookmarks that usually end up jumbled in a drawer.

I'm limited to one bookcase and have a few piles of favourites round my desk. And on my bedroom dresser. And on the partner's dresser. And on the coffee table. And the dining table……..

Since I moved into an apartment, unfortunately most of my books are still in boxes because I had wall to wall book shelves in my old place (my husband built them for me), but I really don't have room to put my books out until I figure something out here! I do have a box containing all of my favorite books, but my signed book collection has a special place in a laundry basket next to the TV! LOL One of these days I'll get organized, or at least that's what I keep telling myself!
I have tons of bookmarks because I am a TOTAL swag whore, and I keep them in a manilla folder right next to my reading chair so I can take them out and enjoy them whenever I want! Not quite as good as your system, but it'll do for now!
Thanks for a terrific post and giveaway:)

I never even thought of having a special place to store my bookmarks aside from just at the end of a row on my bookshelf. I do have a few that I rather like but it seems like I usually end up using a business card/whatever is at hand instead.

I don't have a favorite reads shelf either but I do tend to put the not so favorite reads on less prominent shelves.

    GREAT SHELVES!!!!!!

haha I double-stack, side stack whatever stack (though neatly and not too crammed so that they don't get damaged) too to make the most of shelving space ;D

As for me my repressed artist shines through with shelving style, it's guided 60% by genre 40% by aesthetics- I don't alphabetize.

gotta say that my favorite bookshelf porn of all time is Neil Gaiman. I mean…wow…just…wow

I'm really not an organized person but I'm totally different if it comes to books! 🙂 I love when my books are organized on my shelves though I don't sort them by their genre. I put my favorites (like Jeaniene Frost's and Jaye Wells' books) to a well visible place 😀 But even though I don't sort my books, I always know where to search if I want to reread a book! 🙂
