On the Book Lovers’ Shelves

Filed in On the Book Lovers' Shelves , The Quirky Lover Posted on August 18, 2011 @ 11:00 am 21 comments

Here at Book Lovers Inc., we claim to be “book lovers”. Now we’ve decided to back up those claims. We’re going to be showing off our book shelves at home to prove just how crazy adoring we are! I recently acquired two additional bookcases, so I volunteered to let you all have a peek at mine first (while they’re still relatively neat 🙂

This bookcase is in my bedroom. The top two shelves are dedicated to my review copies that I will be working on soon. Then there’s all of my Anne Rice books and various mystery/suspense books.

These are my two most recent additions. They sit on either side of the window in my kitchen. (Did I mention I live in an 840 sq. ft. apartment?) The left side contains reference books and cookbooks, for the most part. The right bookcase holds my David Eddings books, Patricia Cornwell, Kathy Reichs, M.C. Beaton, plus a few other female mystery writers.

These two shelves sit in my living room. The bookcase on the left holds all of my YA books. There’s still some space available but I imagine it won’t be long before that gets filled too :-p And it also has pictures of my daughter over the years; the baby pic is my absolute fave!

The right side bookcase holds my Canadian author collection, including Margaret Atwood, Robertson Davies, Guy Gavriel Kay, and others. It also has a ton of the classics squished onto one poor, sagging shelf.

This bookcase doubles as my TV stand (and all of the other junk that goes along with it :-p ). Here you’ll find Charlaine Harris, some collected works, like Shakespeare, Austen, the Bronte Sisters, plus lots of other chick lit and literature. BUT, what you see here is only half of it! There is a second layer of books hidden right behind this one.

Despite the new bookcases that have only been in my apartment for two weeks, I have very little space left. I’ve tactfully omitted the piles of books stacked in various spots around the apartment, not to mention the large bookcase in my daughter’s bedroom 😮

I sometimes feel a bit crazy with all these books around, but can easily justify them by telling myself, someday, I’ll be able to share them with my daughter. What do you all think? Do I qualify officially as a Book Lover? Let me know!

    I loooooooove looking at people's shelves. *g*
I'm envious your shelves look pretty neat. I should *ahem* maybe do something about mine before it's my turn to do the post LMAO

I hear you, ALL my shelves have 2 layers of books. O_O Even…the TBR shelveS <== notice the plural here. Eeeek

Funny enough most of my YA are on a back layer LMAO. Muahahah

And the baby pic is very cute indeed *g*

@Natalija – Thanks! They will probably stay like this for another week or so, lol.

@Caro – It's only because I fixed them 2 weeks ago that they look like this. Most were doubled up before that. Those 2 shelves are REVIEW COPIES only. I have many books on the shelves that I haven't read yet 🙁 I'm seriously twitchy though because I can't see those other books in behind. I need to rent a 2nd apartment for the books alone!

ooooh I love the new book shelves!! I want those kind too.

  • pattepoilue August 18, 2011 at 12:01 pm

@Jackie oh my…this is a bit scary! Yes we should have one of these

  • Karen August 18, 2011 at 12:07 pm

Look at how neat and orderly you are!!
I just got shelves from Ikea and I have so much fun organizing and re-organizing the shelves.
    It's a never-ending process.

  • Jackie August 18, 2011 at 12:09 pm

@Mel – It would be great if they were taller; they really hold a lot. Give it a month or two and you'll see 😉

@Caro – I could just get rid of my bed and put those in there! I've seen them on TV; very cool indeed.

@Karen – If I ever have time, I might pull them apart and re-organize by colour, LOL.

  • Blodeuedd August 18, 2011 at 12:22 pm

What else can I say than that they look great 😀

  • Jackie August 18, 2011 at 12:24 pm

@Blodeuedd – I suppose you could diagnose me with OCD or something, lol. I'll thank you for not saying out loud though 😀

  • Melissa (My World...in words and pages) August 18, 2011 at 12:33 pm

Okay, you really have me beat! WOW. Love the shelves with the glass fronts. 🙂 Beautiful. Now do be careful Blodeuedd doesn't see… Oh, sorry she did already. ;D *whispers* put a lock on them…

  • Jackie August 18, 2011 at 12:46 pm

@Melissa – Thanks! And I never thought of that! I'm off to call the locksmiths now 😉

  • Jen B. August 18, 2011 at 12:48 pm

I don't know if you're a book lover. There was some free space under the kitchen window! HAHAHA! I have IKEA on my to do list for this fall. I am desperate for some more shelves. My daughter says the shelves are starting to warp and crack. Thanks for the tour.

  • LSUReader August 18, 2011 at 12:51 pm

Oh, my…Such beautiful bookshelves. Definitely a Book Lover, Jackie!

  • Jackie August 18, 2011 at 12:58 pm

@Jen – Oh, don't joke! I have this short, cheap bookcase that I was going to put there. It's the only space left for expansion, lol. I want one of those Ikea setups that go around an entire room. Hope you get yours soon 🙂

@LSU – Yay! I don't have an exact count, but I always discover a book I don't have and feel the need to buy it, lol. And thus the inventory grows :-p

Oooo, VERY envious of your bookshelves. I wish I had some. But living with relatives gives you very little say over the furnishings.

I've converted every available surface in to book storage for the durations.

Window ledge? Books stacked in a cat-friendly manner. Dresser? Filled to capacity. (Clothes are stored in a shoe hanger in the closet. It couldn't take the weight of books). Cd rack? Perfect for mass market paperbacks.

Bookshelves are near the top of my to-be-purchased list as soon as I acquire permanent employment. Right after a bed. Which will most likely have shelves built into the frame. 🙂

  • Jen B. August 18, 2011 at 5:39 pm

@Jackie – I take it back. You are definitely a book lover. You totally got my IKEA reference. I love the catalog pictures with the shleves wrapping around the room {sigh}.

  • Jane August 18, 2011 at 5:46 pm

I love checking the bookshelves of others. I would say you qualify as a book lover.

  • Stella (Ex Libris) August 19, 2011 at 7:50 am

Jackie I looove your bookshelves! They look beautiful! So neat and in order, I'M furiously blushing because my room looks like a bomb went off. And I'm so jealous you have so many great bookshelves, they look great! 😀

(and yep, my bookshelves all have 2-3 layers of books on one shelf;-p)

And your daughter looked/looks so cute 🙂

  • Sheree August 19, 2011 at 3:56 pm

I love books shelves! Too bad I have more books than mine can hold and, like Stella, mine all have more than one layer of books already.

Yours look great! And, yes, you are indeed a book lover! 🙂

(I had to create a spreadsheet to keep track of the books I have since so many are in the garage also)

  • BooksforCompany August 21, 2011 at 5:48 am

Oh wow, You have so many bookcases .. so lucky.

  • Natalie Zaman August 22, 2011 at 7:51 am

Totally a book lover (also like your organization!–I appreciate it because I have none…)
