The Good The Bad and the Are-You-Kidding-Me?

Welcome to our new edition of The Good, the Bad and the Are-You-Kidding-Me? This is the place where we let our shallow side rules and we do judge books by their covers (ok we’re just judging the covers but still!!). This week’s theme  came from the cover reveal of Playing to Win. Pervs Admirers of the male body that we are, we couldn’t help but start discussing how easily a man chest on a cover can turn from super sexy to very disturbing. Here’s the result of our little bit of research 😉 I know man chest on covers are not universally loved so it’ll be a good excuse to discuss the topic!

Disclaimer: We were THIS close to using all the cover in the Play by Play series, because let’s be honest they rock! But we’ve been good girls and we kept looking for other covers. *await the head-patting* *purrs* Ok now we can start.

Susi: Okay as we already admitted we do adore the Play by Play covers with a passion. That guy just looks perfect and those pants make me wanna pull at the strings. LOL I do like that he just looks real and not like you know bad photoshop and a bucket of oil. I love the contrast of his skin color to the background and pants. It’s just kind of stylish. Al thumbs up. The Dream of a Dark Warrior cover does shine through its colors. I love that the whole picture itself is kept in black and white and makes the title and author name pop like that. The chest itself is intriguing because of scar and I do like that even though we actually do only see chest it’s not that overwhelming. It’s balanced just right. Great composition in my eyes. surprisingly I do like the half cut off face. His expression looks a bit grim and determined. Yum.
The Insatiable cover is not that easy to judge for me. When I see it on the pc I’m all it’s okay but not that outstanding BUT when I pick up my print copy it makes me swoon. I think the whole look of the book including the spine and back of the book makes it work. Both are kept in an orange and have these swirly thingies you can see at the title and author name. Also the body itself looks less yellowish on my cover. BUT i don’t like his bellybutton but well I do have a little bellybutton disorder so it is prolly just me. 😉
The Sweet Possession cover is special for me because of the colors. It looks so soft and touchable. I do like that the guy has his hand so possessively on her hip. *sigh* And well I do like how he is build. It’s exactly the rigth amount for me- not too bulging. I have to admit that I don’t like the half of his face so much though. He looks so soft. And now that I stare at it for a bit longer there are these 3 gray lines under his mantitty. That does look weird. But oh well. At least he’S not perfect. 😉

Caro: Somehow I KNEW you’d mention that bellybutton LOL. *drools at covers* I have a bad addiction to the Play by Play covers. They are perfect. I also really want to pull on the strings of his pants. I love the colors, I love how his body looks. Seriously I just LOVE it.
The Cole cover works for me. It’s simple but oh so yummy. He’s not over-muscled and the ‘lack’ of colors make it easier to focus on him.
Insatiable is a cover that grew on me. At first I wasn’t sold by this lean but muscle guy but now I appreciate his muscle definition. He’s sexy in a different kind of way. I think it’s the lighting that make it work. Also the guy isn’t posturing or trying to show his muscles.
Sweet Possession is soooo pretty. It’s sexy and sweet at the same time. It conveys a sense of love, not lust. I also think it’s the lighting that makes it work. The colors are soft. 2 thumbs up

Susi: Now that you say it I think the posturing is a big factor. We don’t want the guys who try too hard.

Caro: Now let’s hope we’ll nave have a cover with a man touching his bellybutton. LOL *runs & hides*

Susi: Ewww, seriously. Ick ick ick!

Caro: See, as much as I loved the covers from the top, these just don’t work for me. It’s hard to say exactly why but I’ll try. Pack Challenge looks awkward to me, it’s not bringing anything special to the cover and the weird booby angle makes me cringe. The Darkest Hour’s problem is that the man looks like a Ken doll. He looks like he’s made of plastic Also there’s something disturbing about a half naked man packing heat
Alright so maybe my problem with Breakaway is not only coming from the naked chest. I think the ugly green color isn’t helping. The man’s body doesn’t do much for me though. ⇐ Hard to explain why.
Jacked up makes me want to laugh Too much posture, too much arm muscles. I don’t like it much.

Susi: I think the Pack Challenge problem for me is that the part we see on the cover isn’t chosen really well. The way the left side is cut of his moob looks like a boob to me. And well it just seems to be randomly pit together. There just seems to be missing something to pique my interest.
The Darkest Hour shows what I don’t like at all- oily chests. when I look at this dude I’m thinking: “Don’t hug me or my cloths will be ruined with stains I will never get out.” Yes, I’m weird.
I have to say I actually do like the dude on the Breakaway cover but the green ruins it all. makes my eyes hurt really bad.
As you said, Jacked Up is a bit overdone. The pose, the oil again and well the muscles. It’s too much for my taste. Makes me think about anabolics. I have to say I do liek the rest of the cover though. The font and all that rocks. And still I want that book so bad.

Now it’s your turn! Which cover do you like which do you hate?
Are you a Man-chest cover addict/hater?
Do you also find it weird that the same thing can turn out great as it can turn completely stupid?
Is there a scientific explanation to this Man-chest dilemma? lol

Breakaway would be good, just go easy on the green. It would have so much better with another background.

I am..oh dunno, manchests work, but then they have to work. For example guy with car, where is your shirt? Why are you outside without one? yes I over think things 😉

    • pattepoilue January 30, 2012 at 4:08 pm

LOL i tend to overthink them too. First thing I thought when I saw the Erin book was “Yo sista, wanna fight with me?” <== this is my imitation of street talk LOL

    • Susi January 30, 2012 at 5:25 pm

LOL I know everything about that! Poor guy doesn’t have money to buy a shirt.

  • Laura Kaye January 30, 2012 at 3:47 pm

Bwahaha! This was great, guys! I’m totally laughing at the belly button thing. I think we need a spoof-fic just for Susi! The only one of the bottom four I like is Erin McCarthy’s. He looks bad-ass and I love it! From the top, I love all but the Sweet Possession one – his moob is a little too prominent to me and his jaw isn’t strong enough, although I love their position together. The Pack Challenge book though is total moob-gone-wrong, plus his abs look caved in or something. *shudders* Thanks for the laughs!

    • pattepoilue January 30, 2012 at 4:09 pm

Lol you know I never get bored of teasing Susi with her bellybutton aversion. *iz evil*

    • Susi January 30, 2012 at 5:27 pm

Don’t torture me with belly buttons *shudders* And the Sweet Possession cover is really distracting me with the gray lines now.

  • aurian January 30, 2012 at 4:08 pm

I totally love naked men chests and backs on my bookcovers. Not skinny young boys, but grown and muscled men. So yes, I like most of those covers!
But, someone pointed out the man in Playing to win, has empty pants. And looking closer, I have to agree.
The Kresley Cole cover, he will be perfect in a few years. Love the sword. Insatiable is too young and skinny for me, also, don’t like the belly button, a piercing? I like Sweet Possession.
Pack Challenge is ugly and disturbing, that eye is way too big for the cover. I really like Jacked up and The Darkest Hour. A healthy skin has that glow, really is not oily in my eyes. Not fond of the colors in Breakaway, but the man has a nice sixpack.

    • pattepoilue January 30, 2012 at 4:13 pm

LMAO do you know I took a close look at the Playing to Win cover and i WAS searching for some evidence that he was a man LMAO. <==we're pervs. Maybe it's...tucked in. LOL *looks at her own un-shiny skin* (euphemism for pale as a vampire) Damn where's my healthy glow!

    • Susi January 30, 2012 at 5:28 pm

You killed that cover for me now. Why are his pants empty??? *cries while her dreams shatter*

    • Susi January 30, 2012 at 5:32 pm

Perhaps they accidentally photoshopped it away and yes I’m still staring at that dude’s crotch. LOL

  • Stella January 30, 2012 at 4:28 pm

Terrific post Ladies, loving it! 😀 LOL

I agree, you chose some prize winning covers in the first batch, Jaci Burton covers always make me drool and daydream they are delicious! I agree the pose of the couple on Sweet Possession looks so possessive it makes my heart melt (and my pulse pound) 🙂

Second batch: Poor Pack Challenge guy looks like he has breasts with female nipples eww.. And Caro yep, Ken doll! LMAO 😀 totally agree! Though I find it sexy in a disturbing way seeing his guns on his bare torso 😉 Breakaway looks too photoshop-y to me :-/ I love the guy’s pose and intimidating stance on Jacked Up, but he is standing against a car in the street, why is he half naked? I would have preferred him in a t-shirt, maybe he would have been more sexy a bit more covered up, that alpha male posture would make sure he is swoonworthy..

    • pattepoilue January 30, 2012 at 4:32 pm

You know from the whole Erin series my favorite is the one where the guy is wearing a shirt LOL

    • Susi January 30, 2012 at 5:29 pm

*still cries about the empty pants*

  • Gaby January 30, 2012 at 6:27 pm

I love the Play by Play series covers! They are sooo hot! I don’t know what happened at the Pack Challenge cover, and I just saw another cover of Breakaway without the green back and it’s much better 😛

  • Sullivan McPig January 31, 2012 at 6:30 am

My eyes!!! Now I need to wash them with bleach or something.
I soooo do not like man chest covers. I hate them!! I have not bought books that did sound like I might enjoy them because of the half-naked dude on the cover I’ll confess. *shudders*

    • pattepoilue January 31, 2012 at 6:56 am

Teehee I knew you’d say that! Well you know as much as I love man chest covers I couldn’t read these in public. So Susi and I are currently planning to knit a special Book cover to hide the smut. Muahahahahaahh

    • Susi January 31, 2012 at 11:51 am

LOL You can send me the nice chesty covers. I don’t mind saving your eyes. 😉

  • Mary Kirkland January 31, 2012 at 11:28 am

I’m gonna be the only one here that doesn’t like any of them, aren’t I? I’ve been saying it for weeks that I hate the covers where they cut off the models head or face. It’s irritating me to no end because I am more interested in their face than their belly. They could show the face and still have the manly chest on there but they cut off the head or face and it makes me think of a murder scene or a SAW movie where someone’s head is lopped off.

    • Susi January 31, 2012 at 11:53 am

The thing with faces for me is that they usually don’t look like I picture the character so I don’t mind when they cut those off. I do admit I love some “headshot” covers e.g. Lothaire *pets the pretty books with way too much drool coming out of her mouth’

    • pattepoilue January 31, 2012 at 12:42 pm

Ditto what Susi said. It depends on the model but often i’d rather use my imagination to picture the characters. BUT some models are just perfect for the characters *g*
LMAO @ at Saw thing.. Oh my at least there’s no blood gushing everywhere

  • Sheree January 31, 2012 at 4:28 pm

I’m marveling over how a comparison of manchest covers didn’t contain a single cover of Paul Marron. LOL At least Jed Hill and David Kimmerle were represented. I do have to admit that Paul isn’t as huge as those two guys are (which is probably why I like him so much).

I’m all for manchest covers. They’re pretty much the only books I’d buy (aside from ones with Paul on the cover).

    • pattepoilue January 31, 2012 at 4:45 pm

I know! I did think about him when looking for covers. You know thanks to you I see hi everywhere LOL . I do love these covers but sometimes I see how hard it is to read those books in public LOL

  • Sheree January 31, 2012 at 11:39 pm

Any comment from a bystander about the manchest cover I’m reading gets an automatic lecture from me on various cover models and cover artists. 🙂 I’ve done this before.

    • Susi February 3, 2012 at 5:50 am

Did you see the new Frost cover for teh Vlad book? Yum yum yum.

And I do admit I hug my Lothaire copy each day LMAO
