Around the Bookish World: News-In-Review

Welcome to this week’s news edition! Not much has gone on this week but we have some great trailers from Game of Thrones and the upcoming adaptation of The Host which was written by Stephanie Meyers. There was also smoky going ons at St Martins Press, Book Blogger Con controversy and the usual upcoming covers to watch out for!

The big and very unlikely story coming out this week, is the news of a shipment of weed which was sent to the NY offices of St Martins, however it was incepted by the authorities after reports of a strange smell coming from the two packages. The packages  which had a street value of 70 thousand dollars, were addressed to a Karen Wright but no one of that name exists or is employed by St Martins.  When the news broke on Monday about this, I have to say that my twitter feed was full of jokes that were pure gems!

The upcoming Book Blogger Con looks like its heading for choppy waters, Jessica from Read React and Review has a great post summing this up. It was reported a few months ago that Books Expo America purchased the con which is for bloggers and run by bloggers. I heard of murmurings this may not be a good thing because that aspect might be removed and it looks like that may be the case with a complicated sign up and the issues that had led to bloggers signing up. And now there are reports that bloggers are being asked for stats for their blogs and that they will have to pay more compared to previous cons . Because of this – there is an UN-con being organised to fully support all book bloggers and there are already a few bloggers big and small cancelling their tickets for BBC because of what is happening. I hope the organisers can clarify this position because it  is a real shame that things have denigrated to this but it looks like this may rumble on.

This week also debut the teaser trailer for The Host – Stephanie Meyer’s science fiction tale of aliens invading earth and using humans as hosts. You can see the teaser here.  The Hunger Games will also debut the teaser trailer for Breaking Dawn Part 2.

HBO also released the full trailer for Game of Thrones for season 2! This will premiere April 1st (CANT.NOT.WAIT) –  You can see the trailer here.

And now upcoming books to watch out for! I have a couple of YA’s highlighted this week!

I loved The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson last year – the followup, The Crown of Embers now has a cover and a blurb. Is it fall yet?

Elisa is the hero of her country. She led her people to victory against a terrifying enemy, and now she is their queen. But she is only seventeen years old. Her rivals may have simply retreated, choosing stealth over battle. And no one within her court trusts her-except Hector, the commander of the royal guard, and her companions. As the country begins to crumble beneath her and her enemies emerge from the shadows, Elisa will take another journey. With a one-eyed warrior, a loyal friend, an enemy defector, and the man she is falling in love with, Elisa crosses the ocean in search of the perilous, uncharted, and mythical source of the Godstone’s power. That is not all she finds.

A breathtaking, romantic, and dangerous second volume in the Fire and Thorns trilogy.

This sounds really interesting! Breathe by Sarah Crossan

Inhale. Exhale. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe . . .

The world is dead.
The survivors live under the protection of Breathe, the corporation that found a way to manufacture oxygen-rich air.

ALINA
has been stealing for a long time. She’s a little jittery, but not terrified. All she knows is that she’s never been caught before. If she’s careful, it’ll be easy. If she’s careful.

QUINN
should be worried about Alina and a bit afraid for himself, too, but even though this is dangerous, it’s also the most interesting thing to happen to him in ages. It isn’t every day that the girl of your dreams asks you to rescue her.

BEA
wants to tell him that none of this is fair; they’d planned a trip together, the two of them, and she’d hoped he’d discover her out here, not another girl.

And as they walk into the Outlands with two days’ worth of oxygen in their tanks, everything they believe will be shattered. Will they be able to make it back? Will they want to?

Promised by Caragh M O’Brien – I have a review of the 2nd book coming up soon at Book Lovers Inc and I really enjoyed the first book!

After defying the ruthless Enclave, surviving the wasteland, and upending the rigid matriarchy of Sylum, Gaia Stone now faces her biggest challenge ever. She must lead the people of Sylum back to the Enclave and persuade the Protectorat to grant them refuge from the wasteland. In Gaia’s absence, the Enclave has grown more cruel, more desperate to experiment on mothers from outside the wall, and now the stakes of cooperating or rebelling have never been higher. Is Gaia ready, as a leader, to sacrifice what—or whom—she loves most?

So what do you think about the Book Blogger Con troubles? What do you think of the trailers? Do you think The Host will be as successful as the Twilight movies?

I tried reading the Host but damn that book was boring! Twilight was at least cheesy but I am sure they will flock to it

I liked The host better than Twilight which I never followed up with the sequels although I do enjoy the movies because they are pretty campy (except New Moon which was pretty boring). But it probably will lead to more fans although I wasn’t keen on the montage at the end. I wonder if Meyer will release the sequel to The Host soon?

Haven’t read anything before about a book bloggers con, sounds like fun. But if a publisher is ruining it, that is bad. I never watch trailers, for movies or for books. Not a fan of Twilight, and I still have not watched Game of Thrones, but have read the first 4 books.

Its not a publisher that has overtaken it but I think the new organisers are commercialising it and they want to focus on big bloggers who have large followings so its more focused on publishers targeting them. Its a shame because I heard that the con is a great way for bloggers (big and small) to network with each other and with pubs and authors. I hope there is a way where they can sort this out.

I liked The Host more than Twilight – I thought the premise was more original.

So excited for the upcoming premiere of A Game of Thrones Season 2. Cannot wait! Still have to read the second book, though, in preparation for this season. Also, haven’t read The Host but plan on reading it before the movie comes out:)

Girl of Fire and Thorns was one of the best fantasy books I read last year! Def looking forward to Crown – I wonder who is going to be her romantic interest!

Hmm, that sucks about BBC. I’ve never attended, but it shouldn’t be something that only the big bloggers can enjoy. I’ve seen the UN-con around and I think that’s a great initiative. I hope the new BBC owners get the hint.

    • Has March 24, 2012 at 11:34 am

I hope they do – the way the whole thing has been organised has a lot to be desired and smaller bloggers can be just as influential as a big one. They tend to highlight gems and that helps to spread the word or are more specialised. Its not always about the followings or stats a blog has.
